Italian lawmaker denounces US blockade against Cuba

Rome, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) The need to break the isolation the United States seeks to impose on Cuba, and the condemnation of Washington's blockade against the island, were recurring themes in statements made by Italian lawmakers.

Deputies from the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, along with representatives from the Green and Left Alliance, will take part in the “Route to Cuba: Being Where It Matters” caravan, which is set to travel to the island on September 23.

Key among their demands is urging the Italian government and European Union leadership to use available diplomatic and political tools to foster dialogue and help remove obstacles preventing the Cuban population from accessing to essential goods and humanitarian aid.

Speaking to journalists at the headquarters of the National Federation of the Italian Press in Rome, lawmaker Laura Boldrini of the Democratic Party (PD) expressed her intention to join the initiative to denounce the harm caused by the US blockade against the island, as well as to deliver medicines and school supplies.

“What other country has been the target of an embargo for more than 60 years? No country in the world has ever faced an embargo that has affected entire generations,” said Boldrini, who also serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

The PD representative—who emphasized that Cuba should be removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism—urged the European Union to do more to counter unilateral coercive measures, act in favor of dialogue, and avoid aligning itself with the positions of the United States.
