Belgium no longer views the US as its closest ally

Brussels, Sept 24 (Prensa Latina) The Belgian Foreign Ministry concluded today that the United States is no longer a reliable partner for the country or the European bloc, according to a strategic document revealed by the newspaper De Morgen.

It is now clear that Washington is no longer the ally it once was, the text cited by the newspaper notes.

According to the media outlet, the report warns that current events within the United States “will likely jeopardize a series of vital interests for Belgium and the European Union.”

The document’s authors recommend maintaining engagement with the current US administration while also continuing discussions with the Democratic opposition, cooperating with Congress, and “identifying new generations of bipartisan elites who could play a role in the America of tomorrow.”

European analysts noted that this stance reflects a profound shift in Brussels’ perception regarding the reliability of its traditional partners within the Atlantic alliance.

Foreign policy specialists highlighted that the Belgian document adds to a growing trend in Europe of questioning strategic dependence on Washington, particularly regarding security and trade.

Belgian media reported that the debate over European strategic autonomy is gaining momentum amidst the uncertainty generated by the current US administration’s decisions.

The European Union’s official position has not yet been publicly confirmed by the Belgian government, although diplomatic sources cited by the local press acknowledged the document’s existence and its role as a policy guide.
