Cuba values the worth and experience of older adults

Havana, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Older adults in Cuba are considered invaluable sources of knowledge and experience; today, they can make significant contributions to peace, sustainable development, and the protection of the planet.

International Day of Older Persons will be observed on October 1st as part of efforts to raise awareness about the issues and challenges facing older adults, ensure the full realization of fundamental freedoms, and highlight their inclusion and active participation in society.

Following the Council of Ministers’ approval of Decree 139 regarding the National Observance of the International Day of Older Persons, the country is solidifying this commemorative event within the framework of its public policies and demographic context.

The commemoration—held annually from the last week of September through October 1st under the slogan “Celebrating life, honoring experience”—aims to pay tribute to, encourage, and recognize the contributions of older adults.

Recreational, cultural, and sports activities are planned for communities, “older adult education programs,” cultural centers, seniors’ clubs, nursing homes, psycho-pedagogical centers, hospitals, and polyclinics—particularly within geriatric services.

Cultural, sports, and recreational events held on October 1st for people aged 70 and older will offer free admission, and they will be able to purchase products at special rates at commercial and agricultural fairs.

State-owned enterprises and the non-state sector are required to provide special attention to nursing homes, seniors’ clubs, and the Family Care System, in coordination with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and with the participation of social workers.
