Boosted by US President Donald Trump to fight drug trafficking, crime, terrorism, and other offenses, this structure is viewed as a tool for military intervention and subordination to the United States.
The Partido Socialista (Socialist Party-PS) described the decision as a terrible signal, questioning the government’s move to proceed without sufficient public debate or transparency regarding the initiative’s scope in areas such as defense, intelligence, the presence of foreign agents in the country, and potential participation in joint operations.
The PS warned that “Shield of the Americas” is not merely an information-sharing mechanism; it is a security alliance with a military dimension, convened by Trump as part of a policy that openly asserts US primacy in the hemisphere.
When asked about the doubts the alliance could generate, Kast stated at a press briefing in New York that it is neither a treaty nor does it entail Chilean participation in military operations; rather, it involves coordination among the countries and the exchange of information regarding criminal organizations.
