Jordan rejects Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem

Amman, Sep 28 (Prensa Latina) Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the continued incursions by Israeli settlers into the Al-Aqsa Mosque and affirmed that Israel holds no sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem or its holy sites.

In a statement released by the Petra news agency, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry described the settler incursions—and the accompanying practices, including the one that took place this Sunday—as a “flagrant violation” of the historical and legal status quo of Al-Aqsa.

The Ministry also condemned what it termed “inflammatory statements that fuel tension” made by Israeli officials, and reiterated the Kingdom’s “absolute rejection and firm condemnation” of the incursions and provocative actions within the compound.

According to the statement, these practices constitute a violation of international law and—in Amman’s view—seek to “impose new realities” through attempts to divide the place of worship both temporally and spatially.

Jordan also warned of the consequences of continuing such actions and urged the international community to adopt a stance compelling Israel, as the occupying power, to put an end to violations against Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The Ministry further demanded a halt to measures it considers illegal in the occupied West Bank, as well as an end to incitement against the Palestinian population.

It also reiterated that, according to Jordan’s position, the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims. He added that the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf and the Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Administration—which operate under the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf—have jurisdiction over the management of the compound and the regulation of access.
