At a press conference, the head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office also denied helping violent criminals evade justice, thereby refuting the claims made by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Mariaca—whom Washington has deemed ineligible for a US visa—stated that these accusations coming from abroad are intended to influence and condition the work of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
He indicated that, despite the situation, he would continue with the investigations currently underway, including corruption cases and legal proceedings related to the case of Fernando Cerimedo, a former political advisor to the country’s president, Rodrigo Paz.
Cerimedo, currently in preventive detention at the Chonchocoro prison, faces charges of domestic violence and illicit enrichment; he was also summoned by the Beni Department Prosecutor’s Office regarding a case “linked to flights benefiting drug trafficking,” according to the news outlet Unitel.
In 2024, Mariaca was elected Attorney General for a six-year term during the presidency of Luis Arce; prior to that appointment, he served as the departmental prosecutor for Santa Cruz.
In addition to the accusation against Mariaca, the US State Department announced visa restrictions today against 12 other Bolivian citizens and their family members, revoking their entry documents for the United States, according to media reports.
