Dominican opposition questions results of police reform

Santo Domingo, Sept. 29 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) demanded that the government guarantee security, legality, and concrete results in this area, warning of the potential failure of the police reform implemented by the current administration.

The opposition party stated that the reform has failed to deliver the promised security results to families and denounced the persistence of thefts, assaults, and extortion, while also expressing concern over the rise in fatalities during police interventions.

According to data cited from a May 2026 Gallup poll, 55 percent of the population believes the government is doing a poor job regarding security, while in July, the firm ACD Media identified crime as the nation’s second-greatest concern.

In the organization’s view, the disparity in figures highlights the need for official, transparent, and verifiable statistics.

It upheld that the reform must also be evaluated based on the crimes that affect citizens in their daily lives.

Despite an investment of billions of pesos and over 1.7 million preventive actions, 887 motorcycle thefts were reported between April and June 2026, bringing the total to 4,402 cases by August 31, according to the PLD.

Furthermore, the party warned of massive underreporting regarding crimes such as extortion and digital blackmail, noting that the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) has indicated that 85 percent of victims do not file reports due to fear or a lack of trust in the system.

In light of this situation, the PLD reiterated its support for police officers acting in compliance with the law and in self-defense, but demanded that the Executive Branch change course and carry out seven fundamental actions.
