The announcement took place during an official ceremony held in Baghdad on the occasion of so-called Sovereignty Day, according to a statement by the press office of the prime minister.
Al-Zaidi stated that the end of the mission demonstrates, in his words, the result of cooperation between Iraqi forces and participating countries, and pointed out that this stage does not mean the end of the fight against terrorism.
The head of government stressed that Iraq is now entering a phase in which it takes full responsibility for its security and stability.
The ceremony was attended by the Coalition commander, Rear Admiral Liam M. Hoolin, as well as senior military and security officials.
Al-Zaidi highlighted efforts over the past few years and stated that Iraqi institutions now control the operational and security scene in the country.
He also appreciated the support of the member countries of the Coalition and noted that security cooperation will continue through a more focused scheme, which will include technology and digital tools.
According to the prime minister, this new stage will be based on Iraqi sovereignty, strengthening of state institutions, preparation of security forces and bilateral partnerships with other countries.
He also linked the post-mission phase to state arms control and argued that there should be no weapons or forces outside of state institutions and the constitutional framework.
The US-led International Coalition was established in 2014, after Daesh took over large areas of Iraq and Syria.
The US military operations against the group on Iraqi territory began in August of that year.
In December 2017, Baghdad announced the recovery of all Iraqi territory that had been under Daesh control.
Subsequently, the Coalition’s mission was progressively oriented towards advising, training and supporting Iraqi forces.
In September 2024, Iraq and the United States agreed to end the Coalition’s military mission in the country and move toward bilateral security relations.
The agreements provided for a gradual termination of the military mission and continued support to operations against Daesh in Syria from Iraqi territory until September 2026, subject to conditions on the ground and consultations between the parties.
