Lula toughens rhetoric against Bolsonarism in Brazil

Brasilia, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the opposition during a campaign event in the city of Fortaleza and called on his supporters to defeat Bolsonarism in the upcoming October elections.

Days before the elections, the president told his supporters that the election results would be an opportunity to put an end to the political project associated with former President Jair Bolsonaro, while also defending his government’s key actions.

Lula also revisited a major labor-related campaign pledge, vowing that his administration would work to eliminate the “6×1” work schedule—which entails six consecutive days of work followed by one day of rest.

“Merchants of Fortaleza, get ready, because we are going to put an end to the 6×1 schedule,” the president emphasized, reiterating his support for workers having two days off to spend with their families, study, travel, or simply recover.

At the same event, the president took a harsher tone against Senator Flavio Bolsonaro—a presidential candidate for the Liberal Party and son of the aforementioned former president.

He questioned what he views as an excessive closeness between that political faction and U.S. leader Donald Trump, placing national sovereignty at the heart of the electoral contest.

“It is a question of whether Brazil will be the master of its own house or if someone will comes to dictate how we live our lives,” he stated, before referring to Flavio Bolsonaro as a “vira-lata que vive puxando o saco do Trump”—a colloquial Brazilian expression that translates roughly to “a lapdog that is always fawning over Trump.”

Furthermore, Lula contrasted his administration’s health and education policies with measures adopted during Jair Bolsonaro’s term in office.
