Nicaragua: “University in the Countryside” program goes on

Managua, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Nicaragua's "University in the Countryside" program has recorded over 34,000 enrolled students and involves the participation of several higher education institutions, an official source highlighted.

Bismark Santana, from the Technical Secretariat for University Affairs (Setec), explained that the academic options address community needs, featuring degree programs linked to rural development, tourism, production, and agro-industry.

During the program’s first Student Congress, held at the National Agrarian University (UNA), Santana noted that the initiative identifies the specific demands of each territory through coordination with local structures, community leaders, and municipal governments, aiming to provide timely educational responses.

For her part, UNA Vice-Rector Luz Adilia Luna highlighted the program’s growth; it began as a pilot project in 2012 and now operates more than 226 locations across the country.

“We have reached places and territories where families never imagined they would have access to this kind of quality, free education, complete with all the necessary learning conditions for our students,” Luna stated.

According to official data, with the backing of the Sandinista Executive and collaboration with local governments, the program is currently active in over 60 municipalities nationwide, guaranteeing professional training through an educational model centered on the individual, the family, and the community.

The initiative seeks to bring university education closer to populations in various regions by offering degree programs aligned with their productive activities and opportunities for economic and social development.
