Cuban Ministry of Culture launches Testimonial Series on artists

Havana, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) The audiovisual series *Cuba es Cultura* (Cuba is Culture), directed by journalist Elin Driggs, highlights the personal stories of national artists, employing a narrative style that moves away from standard news pacing.

The first of six episodes—which premiered this week on the Ministry of Culture’s online channels and the *Habana Noticiario* program on Canal Habana—is dedicated to *son* singer Pedrito Calvo, former lead vocalist of the group Los Van Van.

Calvo was recently honored as a “Legendary Artist” by the Cuban Record and Musical Editions Company (Egrem).

In the program, the musician reflects on his early days working in a shoe shop, the drive that led him to the *La Corte Suprema del Arte* (Supreme Court of Art) talent contest, and his view of music as a means to tell the story of and defend Cuban identity.

*Cuba es Cultura* originated from an idea by Daylen Vega—then director of the Multimedia and Press Center (CMP)—who enlisted Driggs to host, write, and direct the project. Osmani Beato handled the production, with Maray Valdes serving as producer, according to the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

Joining Calvo in sharing their stories are visual artist Diana Balboa, dancer Sadaise Arencibia, singer and actor Tony Lugones, and American musician Pablo Menéndez, director of the group Mezcla.

A segment on cultural heritage features Nilson Acosta, vice president of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, the agency added.
