In a press release, the ministry noted that Addis Ababa is the source of the Abay River—commonly known as the Blue Nile—whose flow originates almost entirely from the Ethiopian highlands and contributes approximately 85% of the total water volume.
It also affirmed that the country maintains a geographical and historical link to the Red Sea, located just 30 miles from its coast.
“Consequently, any serious debate regarding regional maritime affairs and the security architecture must consider Ethiopia’s legitimate interests and its enduring link to the Red Sea,” the text emphasized.
The Foreign Ministry stated that these geographical and historical facts cannot be altered by political rhetoric, coercive actions, or acts of destabilization.
“Proxy actions or acts of aggression will not alter the reality on the ground nor undermine Ethiopia’s legitimate regional role and responsibilities,” it asserted.
Reaffirming the nation’s commitment to peaceful understanding, mutual respect, and regional cooperation, the Ministry declared that Ethiopia is prepared to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and fundamental interests.
Finally, it urged all regional actors to address common challenges through constructive dialogue and good neighborliness, rather than confrontation and zero-sum approaches.
