Korean Week in Cuba highlights language, history, and traditions

Havana, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) Hangul (the Korean language) represents the identity that the Korean people fought for centuries to keep and protect, stated Martha Cabrera, director of the Cuban project ArtCor, at the opening of the Korean Cultural Week in Cuba.

The event seeks to expand the promotion and teaching of Korean arts through a varied cultural and educational program, with Hangul taking center stage this year.

Martha Cabrera explained exclusively to Prensa Latina that the event bridges traditional Korean cultural elements with modern forms—specifically pop music (K-pop)—to showcase them to adolescent and young audiences.

Sojeong Myeong, a representative of the diplomatic mission, expressed the hope that the week would “be a great opportunity for many people to discover and enjoy Korean culture.”

As part of the opening, a series of educational talks was held, beginning with a panel on the Korean resistance movement of March 1, 1919, against Japanese colonization.

Discussions covered the territorial dispute with Japan regarding the Dokdo archipelago (known as Takeshima in Japanese) and highlighted topics such as celadon ceramics, traditional games and dances, and the significance of artifacts like masks, writing sets, and traditional costumes, tracing a historical timeline from the ancient kingdoms to the Joseon Dynasty.

The program included a screening of the testimonial documentary *No tan lejos* (Not So Far Away), which explores the influence of Korean culture in Cuba, the migration wave of 105 years ago, the community’s settlement in the Caribbean nation, and the creation and growth of the ArtCor project, which now has over ten thousand members across the country.
