Labor movement must confront the right-wing advance in Latin America

Montevideo, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) The trade union movement must confront the advance of right-wing forces in Latin America, stated Marcelo Abdala, president of the PIT-CNT.

The labor leader maintained that this confrontation requires an agenda combining labor rights, productive development, poverty reduction, and the cultural and ideological struggle.

In an interview with the program *Legitima Defensa* (Legitimate Defense) on *Caras y Caretas*, Abdala emphasized that Uruguay is not isolated from the regional landscape and highlighted the need to build a national development strategy that transcends individual government terms.

He noted that Latin America is undergoing a shift toward the right, citing examples such as labor reforms in Argentina, the debate over the 40-hour workweek in Chile, and the political situations in other countries across the region.

He argued that humanity faces a dilemma between “the barbarism of war” and the construction of a different economic and social order.

He also criticized the concentration of wealth and maintained that technological development, within current social relations, can generate new forms of exclusion.

Faced with this scenario, Abdala advocated for greater South American integration and a national development strategy for Uruguay.

He concluded that the conflict extends beyond economic or labor policies. “I believe there is a significant cultural battle and ideological struggle involved,” he asserted.
