Gaza women and girls face death and serious health risks

Ramallah, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Since the start of war, women and girls in the Gaza Strip have faced high risks of death, injury, displacement, malnutrition, and deteriorating reproductive health, Palestinian sources and international bodies reported on Tuesday.

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) stated that about 12,400 women, excluding girls, have died in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

The data also show that 4,700 women and children are among 11,200 people whose whereabouts remain unknown; many of them may be buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings.

The United Nations Women (UN Women) estimated in its report “The Cost of War on Women and Girls” that more than 38,000 women and girls died between October 2023 and December 2025, an average of nearly 47 per day.

The agency also noted that some 11,000 women and girls suffered injuries with potentially permanent consequences, while survivors face risks stemming from airstrikes, hunger, repeated displacement, and difficulties accessing basic services.

The UN entity noted that more than 71,200 Palestinians, more than half of them women, children, and the elderly, died during that period.

UN Women warned that the figure might be lower due to damage to health information systems and registration mechanisms.
