Colombia: Petro denounces political weaponization of OFAC list

Bogota, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro (2022-2026) condemned the political weaponization of the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list, which targets those named on it for sanctions.

According to the leader, the OFAC list serves as a mechanism to persecute civilian groups with a political identity—an act that constitutes a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute.

“Those responsible for such persecution must be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court,” he stated on his X social media account.

The former head of State, his eldest son, and his ex-wife, Veronica Alcocer, were formally added to the unilateral U.S. list on October 24, 2025.

In a recent statement on the matter, he asserted that the list lacks legitimacy and should not be recognized by any country.

He also criticized the inclusion of International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane on the list.

“The global human rights movement must launch a worldwide campaign demanding the removal of all these individuals—myself included—from the OFAC list,” he emphasized.

A few days ago, the U.S. government announced the lifting of sanctions on 37 individuals and 31 companies from Colombia.

Among those cleared are individuals known by the aliases ‘Gordo Lindo’, ‘El Arquitecto’, and ‘Flechas’, as well as other former drug traffickers who served sentences in the United States for that and other crimes.

Gustavo Petro, Nicolas Petro, Veronica Alcocer, and Armando Benedetti (Petro’s former Interior Minister) remain on the list.
