Cuba outlines impact of blockade to ECLAC, advocates for integration

Santo Domingo, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) Cuba denounced the impact of U.S. measures on its economy before the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), noting that these measures restrict access to technologies, industrial equipment, and financing. During ECLAC's 41st session, currently taking place in the Dominican Republic, Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment Deborah Rivas Saavedra stated that the island's efforts to tackle sustainable development challenges are compounded by the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

She explained that Washington’s measures—which have an extraterritorial nature—affect macroeconomic stability, industrial production, the energy transition, digitalization, and the population’s quality of life. They constitute the primary obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and implementing public policies aimed at the people’s well-being.

She also noted that thousands of shipping containers have been held up at various ports—many containing food, medicines, and medical devices, including shipments contracted by private Cuban companies.

The deputy minister highlighted that Cuba has simultaneously undertaken profound economic and social transformations aimed at recovering its economy and meeting the population’s needs; the well-being of the people, she said, remains the primary objective.

In this context, she emphasized the strategic importance of regional integration for effectively managing these transformations and called for greater cohesion across Latin America and the Caribbean to strengthen value chains, expand markets, foster innovation, and improve international integration.

Rivas Saavedra asserted that, despite sanctions and unilateral measures, the economic and social transformations driven by Cuba serve as an incentive for the domestic and foreign business communities and will contribute to the economy’s recovery.
