The project, known as CubaFruta, is an initiative of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and aims to boost value chains for pineapple and avocado varieties in municipalities such as Los Arabos, Colon, Calimete, and Jaguey Grande for several years.
The AICS said in a press release that the initiative benefited producers linked to cooperatives and agricultural institutions to enhance fruit production, processing, and marketing.
At the project’s closing workshop, Italian Ambassador to Cuba, Simona De Martino, highlighted that the initiative strengthened environmental sustainability and energy resilience in the participating areas.
De Martino noted that, in a complex context, opting for models less dependent on conventional sources is not merely a technological investment but “a commitment to the continuity and adaptability of these territories.”
The AICS, the Tropical Fruit Research Institute, Cuba’s Ministry of Agriculture, the AgriBusiness Group, and the Food Industry Research Institute implemented the initiative, funded by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
