Mexico: Sheinbaum highlights work of Cuban doctors in remote areas

Mexico City, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the Cuban doctors working in Mexico are hired directly and are stationed in very remote areas, where they help provide care to the population.

“The Cuban doctors are hired directly—and it is very important for this to be known—with salaries equivalent to what a doctor earns in our country,” the head of the executive branch noted during her regular press briefing.

“They are in places where they are needed,” she added, “in more remote locations where they help us assist the population.”

In March, Sheinbaum described the bilateral agreement—under which physicians from the Caribbean nation provide services in Mexico—as excellent, noting that they are of great assistance.

“We have a very good agreement (with Cuba) that also helps us a great deal. In other words, it is a bilateral agreement that is very beneficial for Mexico,” she said in response to a question regarding pressure from Washington on Latin American countries to abandon medical cooperation with the island.

The president remembered that it was Cuban doctors who helped this nation during the pandemic under very difficult conditions; currently, they are working in many locations and “are paid what they are supposed to be paid.”

“It is obviously part of a bilateral agreement. I mentioned that in the north—in Baja California Sur—it is difficult to get Mexican medical specialists to go there, yet the Cuban doctors are willing to work there. And in many rural areas where we need medical specialists, they are there,” she emphasized.
