Brazilian military officials concerned about potential U.S. base

Brasilia, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian Army generals are weighing increased military involvement in the fight on organized crime in light of a potential presidential victory for Flavio Bolsonaro, yet they warn of risks to national sovereignty posed by a possible U.S. base.

According to an investigation published by the news portal UOL, five officers consulted refered that the use of the military in public security has been under discussion within the Army’s high command for approximately two years.

The force’s commander, General Tomas Paiva, is among those advocating for greater cooperation with security agencies—specifically through the sharing of intelligence and military equipment—without necessarily implying the deployment of troops to the streets.

Some generals believe the Armed Forces should not take the lead role in confronting criminal organizations, although they admit that coordinated participation alongside other institutions could help combat them.

Military attention is also focused on the borders, where the Army Intelligence Center is presenting studies to the high command regarding drug trafficking and its implications for national sovereignty.

On the international front, the generals stated that military cooperation between Brazil and the United States has remained intact, despite tensions between the administrations of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump.

However, the Army leadership views with concern the U.S. designation of the *Primeiro Comando da Capital* (PCC) and *Comando Vermelho* (CV) as terrorist organizations, as they believe this move could pave the way for proposals regarding U.S. military intervention on Brazilian soil.
