The president’s visit is also linked to the country’s support for the candidacy of Angolan national Josefa Sacko for the post of FAO Director-General, according to the Presidency’s Office of Institutional Communication and Press.
Lourenco’s participation in the World Food Forum offers an opportunity for Angola to strengthen its presence in international debates on agriculture, food, and sustainable development, as well as to promote the national bid for the FAO leadership, the source noted.
Sacko, an agronomist and diplomat, brings experience gained as Secretary-General of the Inter-African Coffee Organization and as the African Union Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture; she also enjoys the backing of countries across the continent.
Her bid for the FAO Director-General post—with the election scheduled for July 2027—prioritizes strengthening family farming, ensuring women and youth have access to means of production, creating job opportunities for young people, and facilitating generational renewal in the agricultural sector, the Angola Press agency reported.
The World Food Forum is taking place from October 12 to 16 under the theme “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” featuring participants from governments, international organizations, scientific institutions, the private sector, and civil society.
