Juliana Soares, head of the Caribbean Division at the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, reiterated her country’s opposition to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States, as well as to restrictions in the energy sector.
At an event marking the 40th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Havana and Brasilia—held at the residence of Cuban Ambassador Víctor Cairo—the official maintained that Brazil firmly opposes actions contrary to the United Nations Charter.
Speaking before university students, members of the solidarity movement with the island, and representatives of left-wing political organizations and social movements, Soares recalled that Brazil voted in favor of reopening the debate on the blockade—an initiative promoted by Cuba—at the UN General Assembly.
The diplomat noted that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has once again denounced the economic and energy-related measures against Cuba.
She announced that Brazil will again support the resolution presented annually to that forum calling for an end to the blockade against Cuba.
For Brazil, the escalation of sanctions does not resolve differences and tends to worsen the humanitarian conditions facing the Cuban people; therefore, Soares reaffirmed that support for Cuba will continue.
