In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates noted that the Council’s position was adopted unanimously following consultations regarding the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), as reported by Greece, which holds the Council presidency for October.
The Ministry valued the Council members’ emphasis on the obligation of states to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that this stance shows the diplomatic efforts undertaken by Damascus on the international stage.
According to the statement, the pronouncement followed a visit to Syria by the UN Secretary-General, during which he met with residents of the Quneitra governorate and UNDOF personnel to assess the situation on the ground and hear Syrian complaints regarding Israeli actions.
The Ministry also indicated that a visit to the country by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations is planned, with the aim of evaluating conditions in the area.
Damascus reiterated its support for the United Nations and UNDOF in the fulfillment of their mandate and in documenting alleged violations of the agreement.
It also highlighted the need to guarantee the safety and freedom of movement of the international force’s personnel so they can carry out their work without hindrance. The Ministry reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to the UN Charter and relevant international resolutions, as well as to the defense of its sovereign rights and respect for its territorial integrity, in the interest of regional and international peace and security.
Syria and Israel signed a disengagement of forces agreement in 1974, following the October 1973 war. The pact established the separation of troops and a buffer zone supervised by UNDOF, which was tasked with monitoring its implementation in the occupied Syrian Golan.
