Diaz-Canel extols historical memory before ideological agression

Havana, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Diaz-Canel met with Cuban historians, highlighting the defense of historical memory as a pillar of national independence in the face of contemporary ideological aggression, the newspaper *Granma* reported.

Following the commemorative event marking the 158th anniversary of the *Grito de La Demajagua*—the start of Cuba’s struggles for independence—the president held a dialogue with researchers, professors, and specialists in the courtyard of the Havana City Museum.

The academics agreed on the urgent need to convey the historical narrative with scientific rigor and to leverage digital platforms to counter narrative distortions promoted by hostile quarters.

Diaz-Canel emphasized that history is not a static archive but a living tool that explains current resistance and strengthens patriotic cohesion.

He warned that the imperial objective is to erase deep-rooted identity in order to weaken sovereignty, and affirmed that the defense of socialism and social justice rests on a profound understanding of national roots.

“The bell of La Demajagua keeps ringing,” the head of state noted, reiterating that independence, dignity, and revolutionary unity constitute a shield against any attempt at subversion.

He also highlighted the need of improving the teaching of history in classrooms and to boost the active presence of scholars in media and communication spaces.
