Friendship and solidarity with Cuba in the Basque Country

Madrid, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuba was the focus of numerous activities in Bilbao, featuring displays of friendship and solidarity marking the date of October 10, according to the organizers of the event supporting the Caribbean nation.

The “Cuba Day in Euskal Herria” (Basque Country) event was sponsored by the Euskadi-Cuba Friendship and Solidarity Association, in collaboration with the Cuban expatriate groups Desembarco del Granma and Sierra Maestra.

The fourth edition of the gathering, held in the square of Bilbao’s Errekaldeberri neighborhood, took place under the slogan “Kuba: Blokeo Genozida Gelditu” (Cuba: Stop the Genocidal Blockade)—a denunciation of the policy of extreme economic strangulation imposed on the Cuban people by the Donald Trump administration, the source explained.

The day’s program included a roundtable discussion titled “Cuba: Silenced Genocide” and a Cuban dance workshop led by teacher and dancer Ernesto Miari, who encouraged attendees to join in the rhythms of the island.

Participants in the discussion—moderated by Ainara Lertxundi, a journalist for the international section of the Basque newspaper *Gara*—included Eloisa Auat, a collaborator with the Cuban medical cooperation program at the Che Guevara Ophthalmological Center in Cordoba, Argentina; Hassan Perez, a professor at the University of Havana; and Tere Felipe, a Cuban journalist and social media activist.

Also participating were Celina Pereda, of the NGO Doctors of the World (Medicos del Mundo)—who trained in Cuba and formerly served as the Basque Government’s Director of Drug Dependency Programs—and Rene Capote, Economic Counselor at the Cuban Embassy in Spain.

The event included a collection of hygiene and medical supplies for women in Cuba and the promotion of the second phase of the “Argia eta Indarra Kubarentzat. Contra el Bloqueo, Energia para Cuba” (Light and Power for Cuba: Against the Blockade, Energy for Cuba) campaign, launched to fund solar energy installations at healthcare facilities on the island.
