Argentine Chief of Cabinet fined for non-compliance with law

Buenos Aires, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) A court has imposed daily fines of 100,000 pesos (65 dollars) on Diego Santilli—Chief of Cabinet for President Javier Milei—for failing to comply with the University Financing Law, in an effort to compel its implementation.

Federal Administrative Contentious Court No. 11, presided over by Judge Martín Cormick, ruled to apply daily penalties to the Chief of Cabinet for contempt, citing non-compliance with a court order in a case brought by the National Inter-University Council and other parties against the national government regarding the University Financing Law.

With this measure, Judge Cormick seeks to ensure compliance with the judicial ruling and to have the executive branch finally implement the law passed last year by Congress, which had overridden two presidential vetoes.

Meanwhile, Workers’ Party (Partido Obrero) leader Gabriel Solano filed a criminal complaint against President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo for failing to comply with an injunction ordering the national government to implement the Law on University Education Financing and Teaching Staff Salary Adjustment.

The complaint, filed at the Retiro federal courts, aims to determine whether the officials committed the crime of disobedience, among other potential criminal offenses.

The complaint alleges that the Executive Branch persists in failing to comply with a court order mandating the adjustment of salaries for public university teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as the restoration of student scholarship programs, in accordance with the law.
