Inequality in aid for earthquake victims denounced in Panama

Panama City, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) The "Pueblo Unido por la Vida" (People United for Life) alliance, a coalition of Panamanian grassroots movements, denounced inequalities in state assistance for families affected by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that shook the country last Friday.

Speaking from a collection center set up in the capital, the group’s spokesperson, Isabel Guzmán, read a statement expressing solidarity with affected communities—particularly in the central region of the isthmus, where many families are still awaiting aid.

The organization warned that the disaster has exacerbated the vulnerability of low-income sectors, which face greater challenges in recovering their homes and livelihoods and regaining access to basic services.

The document criticized the tendency to downplay the disaster’s impact due to the absence of fatalities, emphasizing instead that thousands of people have suffered material losses and are living in uncertainty.

The social movements called for a comprehensive response—including medical care, medication, and psychological support—prioritizing children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and families in precarious economic situations.

Regarding education, they highlighted the need to assess damaged infrastructure before resuming classes and demanded safe conditions for students and teachers.

The alliance called for the timely, transparent, and equitable distribution of humanitarian aid based on clear criteria and community participation in identifying needs, while also questioning the involvement of U.S. military personnel.
