Over 13,000 people affected and one death due to earthquake in Panama

Panama City, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) — The 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Panama last Friday has left 13,623 people affected and claimed one life, while 3,696 individuals remain in shelters, official sources reported.

According to the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), 879 families reported the total loss of their homes, while another 1,589 families reported moderate, partial, or minor damage to their residences.

The affected population includes 50 pregnant women and 547 people with disabilities, according to the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis.

Official figures indicate that 45 shelters have been set up to house those in need of temporary accommodation—an increase from the 2,841 people reported in shelters last Tuesday.

The Social Security Fund confirmed the death of a 68-year-old woman, identified as Elena Barria, who suffered severe injuries when a wall of her home collapsed in Macaracas, in the province of Los Santos.

The victim passed away at “Ciudad de la Salud” complex, where she was receiving medical care. According to authorities, her injuries, compounded by a pre-existing medical condition, prevented her recovery.

Regarding humanitarian assistance, the government reported that it has transported over 319,000 pounds of aid by air and more than 331 tons of water by road. Additionally, more than 16,000 bags of food supplies have been distributed across 117 communities and shelters.
