The statement, titled “Cuba: Dignified and Sovereign in the Face of the Blockade”—which was also published by the newspaper Bayano Digital—condemns a policy that has persisted for more than six decades. It calls for respect for international law, the sovereignty of nations, and peace.
The letter notes that the upcoming vote at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will once again provide the international community with an opportunity to express its opposition to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the island by Washington.
According to the document, these sanctions harm the Cuban population by hindering access to food, medicine, electricity, and other resources essential for daily life.
The signatories also criticize the pressure allegedly exerted by the Donald Trump administration on other countries to influence the outcome of the vote.
They express their confidence that Panama will continue to support the resolution presented by Havana.
In recent remarks to Prensa Latina, Cuba’s ambassador to Panama, Orestes Perez, highlighted the significance of this initiative, which will be brought before the UNGA on October 27 and 28.
The diplomat expressed confidence that the resolution would once again receive majority support, asserting that the tightening of US measures makes the international call for an end to the blockade even more urgent.
Perez maintained that Washington is pressuring governments and diplomatic delegations to diminish support for the Cuban position, though he expressed his belief that the majority of nations will remain in favor of lifting the blockade.
Likewise, he expressed gratitude for the gestures of solidarity from the Panamanian people, manifested through public statements, support activities, and concrete initiatives aimed at alleviating the consequences of the sanctions on Cuba.
