In its editorial, the newspaper argued that the decision is not constitute an act of justice—as Foreign Minister Omar Bula has attempted to portray it—but rather a move that could damage the country’s international standing.
“This clear gesture of support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump reflects a radical shift in how we conduct our foreign relations,” the text stated.
It noted that Colombia has ceased to be a nation that upholds international law and respects the sovereignty of peoples, choosing instead to join the small group of those who ignore the complex horror continuing to unfold in Gaza Strip.
The editorial also pointed out that Colombia already had an embassy in Tel Aviv, which was effectively meeting the needs of its citizens in Israel.
“There were no logistical reasons, nor any concerns regarding the well-being of Colombians in the region, to justify opening an embassy in Jerusalem.
Instead, it is clear that the objective was to make a political statement—to provide a boost to the agenda of the Netanyahu government,” it noted.
The editorial emphasized that, once again, Colombia is aligning itself with what it termed “Trumpism,” without any clear explanation of how this serves the interests of all its citizens.
