Panama: Solidarity group calls for ending US blockade against Cuba

Panama City, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) The National Coordinating Committee of Solidarity with Cuba in Panama has reportedly urged the country's government to support a resolution calling for an end to the United States' blockade against the island.

In a letter to Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha, the organization asked Panama to vote in favor of the document, to be submitted to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on October 27 and 28.

The letter, which Prensa Latina had access to, states that the US blockade is a primary obstacle to the Caribbean nation’s development and has affected its population for more than six decades, with serious consequences for families, trade, and access to essential resources.

The signatories noted that these coercive measures have tightened since January of this year, with executive orders and regulations to penalize, through tariffs, third nations that supply oil to Cuba.

They also denounced the additional hardships stemming from financial restrictions and Cuba’s inclusion in Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list, a designation that, they asserted, hinders the purchase of food, medicine, and medical supplies.
