Araghchi proposes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, points at US duties

Baghdad, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran has presented the United States with a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and normalize maritime traffic, adding that the final decision now rests with Washington.

During the 52nd meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Baghdad, the foreign minister explained that the proposal was conveyed to the US side via Qatar, according to Iranian media.

Araghchi warned that maritime security cannot be restored through new attacks, threats of destruction, or blockades against any country.

He further reaffirmed that Iran will continue to defend its sovereignty and the interests of its people, maintaining that protecting national rights and pursuing peace are not incompatible objectives.

The head of Iranian diplomacy called on Islamic nations to maintain solidarity and dialogue, and expressed concern regarding the situation on the Arabian Peninsula. In this context, he reiterated Tehran’s support for the independence and territorial integrity of both Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

According to the minister, regional crises cannot be resolved through military means, as such an approach would only exacerbate tensions. He therefore advocated for a security architecture based on cooperation among the countries of the region themselves.

However, US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day ceasefire—conveyed through intermediaries—labeling it “unacceptable.”
