According to a statement from the Iranian Presidency released by the IRNA news agency, the leader warned of the consequences of war on ecosystems during his address to the Leaders’ Summit of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, held in the Armenian capital.
Pezeshkian noted that conflicts not only cause human casualties but also destroy forests, degrade water resources, and contaminate water and soil.
The head of state maintained that attacks attributed to the United States and Israel against Iran have affected industrial facilities, energy infrastructure, and systems dedicated to environmental protection.
He added that the pollution generated by these actions transcends national borders, prompting him to call for international solutions and cooperation in the face of damage that, in his view, has a global scope.
Referring to the Gaza Strip, Pezeshkian described the environmental devastation of the Palestinian territory as an environmental crime and warned that its soil could remain uninhabitable for years.
The United States and Israel initiated military operations against Iran on February 28—according to the context described by Iranian authorities—while Tehran responded with attacks on Israeli targets and US facilities in Arab countries across the region.
