The drive spanned parts of the promenade, the avenues, and the stretch of sand in that area of Rio de Janeiro. It served as a day of popular participation, taking place one week before the second round of Brazil’s presidential election, as reported by the news portal Divinews.
The “Musical Act for Democracy” took place near lifeguard station 5 (Posto 5) in Copacabana, in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro. It featured performances by figures from various generations and musical styles, all advocating for public freedoms, national sovereignty, and Brazilian culture.
Caetano Veloso and Djavan shared a mobile stage, alternating between songs and remarks in which they championed the democratic system. “Music, Brazilian culture—everything to defend democracy,” said Caetano, while Djavan declared, “Long live our democracy and our sovereignty,” according to the newspaper *O Globo*. Furthermore, it was noted that their participation in the event stemmed from the need to defend democracy in the face of challenges to it.
The messages also addressed the fight against sexism, racism, prejudice, and armed violence. Rapper Gabriel o Pensador called for combating these forms of intolerance, while singer Duda Beat advocated for popular unity and democratic freedoms.
The gathering was part of a series of mobilizations across various Brazilian cities during the final stretch of the contest between Lula and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who will face each other on October 25 in the presidential runoff. jdtarc/mar
