Guatemalans commemorate Writers’ Day, paying tribute to Asturias

Guatemala City, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) Guatemalans commemorate Writers' Day paying tribute to 1967 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Miguel Angel Asturias and those who enriched local literature with writing.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports and other Government agencies encourage activities to learn about the artistic achievements of the Guatemalan writer, who was also a journalist and diplomat, as Congressional Decree 901-99 establishes.

The “Luis Cardoza y Aragon” Library in this capital and other institutions nationwide host sessions to analyze his poems, novels, and essays, and discuss his broader contributions to literature.

Composer and educator Joaquin Orellana will present a musical work entitled “La Tumba del Gran Lengua” (The Tomb of the Great Tongue) this Monday, on October 24 and October 30.

The performance features 10 instrumentalists, with singer-actor Fernando Lopez as the narrative thread.

The Miguel Angel Asturias Cultural Center in Guatemala City hosts this cultural event, conceived between 2000 and 2001 and originally premiered at the Ibero-American Theater Festival in Cadiz, Spain.
