A day to celebrate the essence of the Cuban nation

Havana, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) Music, cinema, dance, theater, and literature converge across the country to celebrate Cuban Culture Day—a date commemorating the first time the "Bayamo Anthem" (the national anthem) was interpreted on October 20, 1868.

Cultural institutions, educational centers, libraries, museums, and galleries are hosting an extensive program of activities, including concerts, exhibitions, book presentations, theatrical performances, dance shows, and encounters with artists and intellectuals.

Cuban Culture Day has its roots in one of the most significant events in the nation’s history.

On October 20, 1868, following the liberation of the city of Bayamo by pro-independence forces, the people sang the lyrics to the National Anthem—penned by Pedro “Perucho” Figueredo—for the first time. This moment symbolized the emergence of a distinct patriotic consciousness and a unique national identity.

Historians argue that the events in Bayamo, which took place after the city was captured by independence forces led by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, transcended a mere military victory.

This event represented the assertion of a distinct identity; the Cubans who took part in that struggle were fighting not only for political independence but also for the right to build a homeland with its own symbols, values, and a unique culture.

For these reasons, many historians believe that a national consciousness was born in Bayamo—one that was no longer defined exclusively as Spanish or African, but rather as essentially Cuban.
