Brazilian priest rejects U.S. blockade against Cuba

Brasilia, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian priest Julio Lancellotti has condemned the blockade maintained by the United States against Cuba, advocating instead for diplomatic dialogue, respect for differences, and the right of all peoples to live free from sanctions.

“Our solidarity goes out to the Cuban people; one cannot sanction or blockade the life of a nation—that is unjust,” stated the clergyman, who led a mass for peace and in support of the Caribbean nation in the city of Sao Paulo.

In an audiovisual message shared on the social media platform X by the Cuban ambassador to Brazil, Víctor Cairo, Lancellotti argued that differences between countries should be addressed through mutual understanding rather than through coercive measures that harm the general population.

“That is what diplomacy is for—for dialogue, for embracing plurality, and for respecting differences. Denying people the means to live through a blockade is an act of cowardice,” he remarked.

The day before, the Chapel of Saint Jude Thaddeus welcomed numerous worshippers and supporters of Cuba, who gathered to call for peace and to protest the economic, commercial, and financial siege imposed on the island by Washington for more than six decades.

Attendees at the ceremony told Prensa Latina that, at several points, the cry of “Long live Cuba!” (“¡Viva Cuba!”) could be heard.

During the mass, Lancellotti championed respect for all peoples and nations, expressing his solidarity with those suffering the consequences of policies rooted in hostility and exclusion.

The event served as yet another demonstration of support for Cuba from various sectors of Brazilian society, occurring against a backdrop of intensifying U.S. coercive measures—measures that impact essential economic activities and the daily lives of the Cuban people.
