US moves to block support of Cuba at the UN decried in Mexico

Mexico City, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) Organizations from Mexico and around the world have condemned the maneuvers, pressure, and blackmail employed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to prevent votes in favor of a Cuban resolution at the United Nations against the blockade.

In a statement signed by, among others, the “Jose Marti” Association of Cubans Residing in Mexico, Rubio’s actions were denounced as a violation of international law, as he attempts to prevent countries from exercising their sovereign right during the vote on the document, which is scheduled for late October.

“We repudiate the threats of sanctions, promises regarding tariffs, covert reprisals, and undue pressure—constituting a ‘diplomacy of blackmail’—that the Secretary of State is directing toward the heads of state and government of various countries,” they stated.

They characterized these actions as a flagrant violation of the principle of the sovereign equality of states and the non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations—tenets established under international law and the United Nations Charter itself.

They also categorically rejected the use of the United Nations (UN) to host an event on the 19th, requested by Washington’s permanent mission, which is “cynically titled ‘Free Cuba: The Oppression Havana Hides.’”

They emphasized that, in his desperation to avoid another diplomatic defeat, Rubio is using this “farce” to conceal the collective punishment he is inflicting upon the entire Cuban people, while attempting to make the international community his accomplice.

The organizations reaffirmed that the U.S. blockade, the inclusion of Cuba on a list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism, the energy embargo, and the persistent sanctions against entities and individuals on the island amount, in practice, to “genocide without bombs.”
