Brazil reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Brasilia, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) Last year, Brazil recorded 1.41 billion tons of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere—nine percent less than the amount recorded in 2023 and the lowest level since 2012.

These data come from the fourteenth edition of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimates System, presented this Wednesday by the Climate Observatory, a network of civil society organizations. Without accounting for carbon absorption by secondary vegetation and protected areas, gross emissions reached 2.06 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent—six percent less than the 2.19 billion tons recorded in 2023.

This volume represents the lowest level of gross emissions since 2018, with the decline in deforestation serving as the primary factor behind this reduction.

Meanwhile, the land-use change sector—which includes logging and the transformation of natural areas—accounted for 814 million tons in gross emissions, a 15 percent decrease compared to the previous year.

David Tsai, coordinator of the aforementioned system and a specialist at the Institute for Energy and the Environment, highlighted that Brazil has reduced its gross emissions by a quarter over the last four years.

Other sectors showed less favorable results: the agriculture and livestock sector saw its emissions decrease by only 0.1 percent, to 626 million tons, while the energy sector saw an increase of 1.2 percent, reaching 427 million tons.
