Cuban Minister of Energy assesses working visit to Moa municipality

Holguin, Cuba, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) — The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) is currently promoting alternatives for energy sovereignty and local production in this eastern Cuban province to mitigate the severe impact of the U.S. blockade.

During a working visit to the municipality of Moa, the Minister, Vicente de La O Levy, met with executives from the Cubaniquel business group to evaluate the implementation of economic transformations aimed at revitalizing the country’s productive development amid a climate of financial strangulation.

Faced with restrictions that have reduced fuel imports—which historically accounted for five of the eight million tons consumed annually by the Caribbean nation—to a bare minimum, the sector is prioritizing the use of local resources and the integration of new economic actors.

As part of efforts to recover the National Electric Power System (SEN), the Nickel Mechanical Enterprise (Empresa Mecanica del Niquel) is making progress in restoring high-voltage transformers, while plans are underway to install portable generators and solar panels for the benefit of the community.

Authorities in the sector highlighted the upcoming reactivation of a small-scale hydroelectric plant, emphasizing that domestic crude oil production and endogenous alternatives are crucial for sustaining the country’s vitality in the face of import limitations.

During the discussions, the Ministry’s Director of Oil and Gas, Dania Agudin, explained that these measures are part of the government’s Economic and Social Program regarding energy sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Alexander Garcel, General Director of the Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara Enterprise, outlined the facility’s efforts to maintain a stable contribution to the national electric power system, despite the obstacles posed by the blockade.
