During an event at that public school as part of commemorations marking the 100th birthday of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro (1926–2016), Ciudad Sandino Mayor Maria Elena Guillen highlighted the enduring relevance of his ideas.
Guillen stressed Fidel’s legacy of defending the nation’s independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, his solidarity with other countries, and his faith in new generations.
The mayor mentioned Cuba’s support for several nations through medical and scientific cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic as a reflection of the island’s humanist and solidarity-driven spirit.
She also underscored the importance of passing on Fidel Castro’s ideas to the youth and keeping his example alive as a benchmark for the struggles for the independence and dignity of peoples.
Cuba’s Ambassador to Nicaragua, Iliana Fonseca, however, expressed her pleasure in participating in this cultural and reflective event at an educational center named after Fidel, a gesture she described as a testament to the historic bonds of brotherhood between the two nations.
