Paraguayans launch campaign supporting Cuba

Asuncion, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) — The Paraguay-Cuba Solidarity Coordinating Committee is spearheading a campaign to urge President Santiago Pena’s government to vote in favor of a UN resolution that condemns the United States blockade and demands its lifting.

In their initiative—which is being promoted and shared across digital platforms, particularly Instagram—Paraguayans in solidarity with the island point out that Paraguay has voted against the blockade 31 times, and that it now has the opportunity to do so again on October 28.

“The Paraguay-Cuba Solidarity Coordinating Committee urges the government to return to its historical position and vote against the blockade—a form of collective punishment that affects the entire Cuban people,” states the campaign, which has garnered support from prominent figures across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Among them are Argentine political scientist Atilio Boron; Mercedes Canese, former Paraguayan Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, who now serves as a parliamentary advisor and consultant on energy and industrial issues; Juana Casuriaga, president of the Popular Convergence Party (Partido Convergencia Popular); and Peruvian lawyer Carlos Figueroa—a former prosecutor and member of the *Grupo Emancipador*—among many others.

After denouncing Washington’s hostility as a crime against humanity, Boron called on the Paraguayan government to vote in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution condemning this hostile policy. “The government of Paraguay must rise to meet this immense civilizational challenge: putting an end to this economic war against our brotherly Cuban people,” insisted the political scientist.

In the campaign video, Casuriaga expresses gratitude for the profound solidarity that the island has shown toward our own people and nations across the globe. He insisted that the position taken last year by Santiago Peña in favor of the blockade does not represent the interests of the Paraguayan people. “Our people have been, and will always continue to be, in solidarity with the nations of the world,” he emphasized.
