Cuban center attends global forum on shared waters in Indonesia

Cienfuegos, Cuba, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) The Center for Environmental Studies of Cienfuegos (CEAC) represented Cuba at the 11th Biennial International Waters Conference of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which concluded in Bali, Indonesia.

The event, attended by over 400 delegates from several countries, brought together representatives from international organizations and development partners with the goal of strengthening collaboration and accelerating sustainable solutions for freshwater and marine ecosystems shared by nations, the scientific institution reported to Prensa Latina.

Mabel Seisdedo, a senior researcher at the CEAC who participated in the event, stated that the conference served as an important forum for achieving concrete results regarding the health of the planet’s oceans and shared water sources, drawing on both scientific knowledge and political will.

Focused on “Shared Waters, Transformative Solutions: Enabling Systemic Change,” the conference provided a platform for exchanging knowledge and showcasing practical solutions, with an agenda that included pre-conference workshops, technical site visits, and thematic panels.

The sessions addressed interconnected pressures—such as marine pollution, biodiversity loss, and the impacts of climate change—as well as key topics including the blue economy, the management of marine protected areas, blended finance, and water governance.

At the opening, Diego Mesa, CEO and Chairperson of the GEF, highlighted the commitment to strengthening existing cooperation and promoting solutions that yield long-term, sustainable benefits.

Cuba’s participation in this forum is part of the Caribbean nation’s broader efforts to move forward in the sustainable management of its water and marine resources—a critical endeavor for an island nation, where international cooperation is essential for addressing the challenges posed by climate change and protecting biodiversity.
