Figueres acknowledged the participants’ commitment to defending Cuba and advocating for their causes.
In her remarks, she expressed her hope that the event would help amplify their voices in France and other countries, and bring greater visibility to their demands on behalf of the Cuban people.
The mayor stated that solidarity is an integral part of Malakoff’s identity, linking it to the defense of peace, international law, the freedom of nations, and the dignity of oppressed minorities.
In this context, she denounced the impact of the US blockade on Cuba—in place since 1960—noting that its intensification during the presidency of Donald Trump has exacerbated the hardships faced by the Cuban population.
She also remembered that, since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has annually passed resolutions—by an overwhelming majority—calling for the lifting of the blockade.
Furthermore, she urged France, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities.
The mayor reaffirmed her support for organizations committed to peace and national sovereignty.
