Brazil elects president bt. Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro

Brasilia, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro face off Sunday in the presidential runoff, for which 158.7 million Brazilians have been called to the polls.

The vote will determine who will be running the largest country in Latin America for the next four years, putting two competing visions at stake on the role of the State, economy, social policies, public security, and international relations, among other issues.

Lula, of the Workers’ Party (PT), seeks re-election to continue on with social programs, increase household income, increase public investment, protect the environment, and diversify export markets.

Flavio Bolsonaro calls for a conservative platform highlighting public security, support for the agricultural sector, and changes to economic management.

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) reported that in the October 4 first round, the legislator secured 47.03 percent of the valid votes, compared to 45.16 percent for Lula.

Because neither candidate for the seat of the Executive Branch, reached the 50 percent needed to win in the first round, a runoff was required.

The campaign leading up to the runoff featured public rallies, visits to several cities, meetings with different social sectors, and intense social media activity.
