Pope Leo XIV calls to end hostilities in Yemen and boost peace

Vatican City, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) — Pope Leo XIV has called to put an end to hostilities in Yemen and boost peace to be guaranteed in that nation and throughout the entire region, in light of the grave humanitarian situation affecting the population.

During the second part of the Sunday Angelus prayer, delivered from the window of the Apostolic Palace to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Supreme Pontiff expressed his concern regarding the conditions in the Yemeni city of Taiz, where residents are suffering from a lack of food, water, and medical care.

The Bishop of Rome issued a “heartfelt appeal for hostilities to cease, and for the Yemeni people—as well as all the peoples of the region—to be guaranteed the right to live in peace.”

He also prayed for those who were killed or wounded last Friday in a terrorist attack targeting worshippers at the Orthodox Church of St. George in Hamoud, Jordan.

Leo XIV expressed his closeness to that religious community and to the Jordanian nation as a whole—a country which, he noted, is distinguished by its peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among different religions.

The Pope also reiterated his call to pray for peace, inviting the faithful to join spiritually—on October 27—with the heads of Churches and religious leaders who will gather in Assisi, Italy.

The meeting marks the 40th anniversary of the gathering originally convened by Saint John Paul II in 1986.

“Never before has it been so evident that wars, in addition to sowing death and destruction, impoverish and damage the world,” the Pontiff stated, praying that the Lord might inspire decisions oriented toward dialogue and peace.
