Chile adopts ambivalent stance at the UN on blockade of Cuba

United Nations, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) — During the UN debate on the blockade, Chile rejected unilateral economic, commercial, and financial measures, while simultaneously aligning itself with U.S. rhetoric regarding an alleged lack of freedoms in Cuba.

“Chile participates in this debate guided by the same principles that have shaped its foreign policy under governments of various political stripes: respect for international law, confidence in multilateralism, and the defense of human rights,” stated the representative of the South American nation.

He affirmed that his country is an open economy, integrated into the global system, and that it believes in free trade between nations as a driver of development and well-being.

He added that Chile also believes in a rules-based international order, noting that the United Nations Charter entrusts the Security Council alone with the responsibility of determining when and how the international community should adopt coercive measures.

For this reason, he asserted, Chile has not supported—and does not support—unilateral economic, commercial, and financial measures.

He further noted that broad-reaching policies of this nature ultimately fall most heavily upon the most vulnerable segments of the civilian population.

Nevertheless, the Chilean representative argued that the difficulties currently faced by Cuban families are not solely due to external factors, but also to what he described as “restrictions on freedoms.”

He avoided any mention of the harm caused by the nearly 70-year-long blockade—specifically the oil embargo imposed by President Donald Trump last January—which is currently affecting the population through power outages and detrimental impacts on healthcare, education, food security, and all other sectors of society.
