Under the slogan “Cuba calls, Terni responds,” members of the organization AsiCuba Umbria and other friends of the Caribbean nation denounced the “criminal” and “genocidal” policy that the Washington government has pursued against Cuba for more than six decades.
“They want to annihilate Cuba because it represents a concrete alternative—based on solidarity and popular participation—to the capitalist system, which is built upon tyranny, the exploitation of the working classes, repression, and environmental devastation,” stated the participants in a post on the Facebook page *Potere al Popolo*.
They also demanded that their government uphold Italy’s long-standing position of voting in favor of the resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” which will be presented on October 28 at the United Nations General Assembly.
In a recent letter to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the organization AsiCuba Umbria urged the government to defend Italy’s sovereignty within this premier multilateral forum and to support the Cuban resolution—consistent with the stance taken by previous Italian administrations in past votes.
The letter emphasized that such measures also harm Italian citizens and businesses, citing as an example the difficulties faced by Italian pensioners living in Cuba in receiving their pension payments.
AsiCuba Umbria deemed it unacceptable that the suffering of the population be used as an instrument of political pressure, and called on Italy to uphold international law in the face of Washington’s unilateral measures.
