Tamara Valido, president of the Permanent Commission for Services at the Cuban National People’s Power Assembly (ANPP), made the statement during the first plenary session of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, focused on the fundamental role of parliaments in strengthening institutional resilience for a better future.
Valido noted that her country is currently operating under a “war economy,” driven by the tightened economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, as well as Cuba’s inclusion in Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list, which exacerbated the socioeconomic situation in the Caribbean nation.
The Cuban lawmaker explained that the “maximum stifling” policy designed by the US government against her country is accompanied by efforts to destabilize, discredit, and wage a media war to incite social unrest.
The Cuban parliamentarian pointed out that, due to this complex landscape, the ANPP serves as the forum where profound economic and social transformations are debated and approved.
Valido said the Cuban Government’s Program and the economic and social transformations are the legislators’ work agenda through permanent commissions and subject to the Council of State’s oversight and monitoring.
