In a statement, the organization—led by Miguel Mejia—asserted that this move constitutes an assault on the Cuban people and their Revolution, aimed at weakening the resistance maintained by the country’s authorities and citizens in the face of an intensified economic, commercial, and financial blockade by the United States.
The MIU stated that the measure lacks legal validity and, in its view, reflects the desperation of the administration of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the face of Cuba’s response to the U.S. strategy of “maximum pressure” and economic strangulation.
The organization denounced what it termed an “infamous act” against a historic leader of a sovereign nation, and defended Cuba’s right to self-determination and respect for its sovereignty.
The MIU’s stance comes in response to an announcement made on October 19 by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, concerning the 1996 downing of two light aircraft belonging to the group “Brothers to the Rescue” (Hermanos al Rescate).
Other Dominican organizations have also questioned the legal validity of the measure, viewing it as a form of pressure against Cuba amidst the ongoing economic siege.
